Introduction

In the dynamic global health landscape, the role of youth undergoes a profound transformation, surpassing conventional participation to catalyse transformative change. At its core, Meaningful Youth Engagement (MYE) embodies this evolution, reshaping paradigms. This webinar emerged as a pivotal platform, uniting stakeholders with the aim of empowering them with a comprehensive understanding of MYE. Guided by insightful dialogues, diverse panellists shared practical lessons and invaluable insights on the need for meaningful engagement of young people in HIV prevention programme design, implementation and monitoring.

Objectives

The specific objectives are:

  1. To define meaningful youth engagement (MYE)
  2. To encourage youth networks in Kenya to reflect on MYE in their context
  3. To share experiences, lessons and insights in terms of what meaningful youth engagement is from global to community level
  4. To provide practical examples of how to assess the levels of meaningful youth engagement using the UPROOT scorecard and to measure this routinely, per the example of The Young People Network on Sexual Reproduction Health HIV and Aids (YPNSRHHA).
  5. To reinforce the need for meaningful engagement of young people in HIV prevention programme design, implementation and monitoring
  6. To raise awareness of international youth day on the 12th of August and feed into build-up activities aligned o the theme of: “intergenerational solidarity: creating a world for all ages

Proceeding

Under the leadership of Janet Musimbi from National Syndemic Diseases Control Council (NSDCC), the virtual session began with an engaging pre-recorded video titled "What Youth Have to Say About Meaningful Youth Engagement." This introduction set the stage for enlightening discussions. Dr Celestine Mugambi, representing NSDCC, warmly welcomed participants, fostering inclusivity. Clarissa Wangui from Maisha Youth then presented the webinar's background and objectives.

Youth Representative Kevin Sila shared a compelling story showcasing the impact of the Maisha Youth Network. Naadu Addico of the Planned Parenthood Association of Ghana (PPAG) shared experiences, insights, and lessons on meaningful youth engagement, highlighting its transformative potential.

A significant stride was made with a global case study on the UPROOT scorecard by a Y+ representative, enriching the conversation on assessing meaningful youth engagement globally.

The exploration continued with a country case study from Zimbabwe, presented by a representative from The Young People Network on Sexual Reproduction Health HIV and Aids (YPNSRHHA). This shed light on practical measurement methods, offering valuable field insights. Facilitated by SSLN Youth Champions Damaris Juma and Gideon Obuya, the lively Discussion and Q&A segment brought diverse perspectives, highlighting the shared commitment to meaningful youth engagement's pivotal role.

Wendy Adamba, SSLN's Country Engagement Lead for Kenya, delivered closing remarks that encapsulated participants' enthusiasm and dedication to actionable change.
