Background

The SSLN East Africa sub-regional cluster countries include Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Malawi and South Sudan. The East Africa SSLN countries have all opted into the Key Populations (KP), Condom, and Adolescent Girls and Young Women (AGYW) HIV prevention pillars. Tanzania, Uganda and South Sudan have also opted into the ARV-based Prevention pillar (previously pre-exposure prophylaxis[PrEP]), while Uganda and South Sudan have opted into the Adolescent Boys and Men [ABM] (previously voluntary male medical circumcision [VMCC]) as well.

The East Africa countries present a diverse experience informed by geographic location in the region, countries’ HIV epidemic contexts, nature/maturity of national HIV prevention programmes, and journey with the SSLN. Additionally, Malawi, Tanzania and South Sudan are among countries in the Tier 1 and 2 "windows" of the Global Fund 2023-2025grant application period. This workshop is a good opportunity for reflection at a sub-regional level, and to identify emerging country priorities and areas for greater support and synergy across the prevention pillars and other cross-cutting themes.

Objectives of the workshop

  1. To review country plans and priorities for the national HIV prevention programmes
  2. Identify best practices for the development and scale up of sustainable HIV prevention programme service delivery
  3. To validate technical assistance needs and learning agenda for countries, and make recommendations for cross-learning in the East Africa sub region.
