Southern Africa Regional Workshop

Pan-Prevention

Background

Civil society is pivotal in Southern Africa's ongoing battle against high HIV prevalence, serving as catalysts for change by engaging communities and enabling active participation. These organisations play a vital role in advocacy for policy reforms, delivering essential services, and reducing societal stigma related to HIV. By spreading awareness, providing education, and empowering marginalised groups, civil society initiatives are integral to a comprehensive and sustainable approach to HIV prevention in the region.

The HIV prevention roadmap for 2025 highlights civil society's indispensable role in its ten-point action plan. This includes reinforcing leadership entities for multisectoral collaboration, involving community-led organisations in decision-making, and strengthening community-led HIV prevention services through funding and social contracting mechanisms. The roadmap also calls for real-time monitoring systems that incorporate data from civil society in progress reports and emphasises accountability by involving these organisations in leading roles.

The South-to-South Learning Network responds to these challenges through a facilitated workshop, bringing together champions across six countries in Southern Africa. Peer-led sessions aim to share best practices, foster constructive dialogue, and strengthen civil society, National AIDS Councils, and Ministries of Health champions, contributing to the global HIV prevention agenda and enhancing capacity in the region.

Workshop Objectives

  • Strengthen the capacity of civil society organisations to secure funding and overcome structural barriers.
  • Foster collaboration between key stakeholders in HIV prevention programming (civil society, MOH, NAC, implementing partners, and funders).
